Science behind Ultherapy

Ultherapy relies on ultrasound therapy to deliver its collagen-boosting treatment. It also incorporates traditional ultrasound imaging, which allows practitioners to see the layers of tissue they are treating, ensuring the treatment energy is delivered to where it will be most beneficial.

Directed Ultrasound waves stimulate collagen production by delivering focused ultrasound energy to the skin’s foundational layer without cutting or disrupting the surface of the skin.

An added advantage of Ultrasound therapy is that unlike lasers, radio frequency, surgery and other technologies, non-surgical Ultherapy bypasses the surface of the skin to deliver the right amount of ultrasound energy at the right depths and the right temperature. This energy triggers a natural response under the skin, jumpstarting the regenerative process that produces fresh, new collagen.

Who is the Ideal Candidate ?

A good Ultherapy candidate has mild to moderate skin laxity where the skin begins to feel and look less firm. Examples include a lowered eyebrow line, loose skin on the neck, sagging under the chin, and lines or wrinkles on the chest. Of course, the best way to find out if you’re an Ultherapy candidate is to consult with your Plastic Surgeon.

The First Consultation

The first thing you will want to do is schedule a one-on-one consultation with Dr Biraj. During this session, your concerns will be understood and addressed, an assessment of your skin type and quality will be done which will determine if you are an ideal candidate for this treatment.
Once you book your Ultherapy® procedure, you won’t need to follow any special preparations or skincare regimens in advance of the treatment.

Your Ultherapy Treatment

Ultherapy is performed in a clinic or a medical center. After cleansing the skin and identifying the specific areas to be treated, your Ultherapy practitioner will apply the ultrasound gel and place the smooth treatment applicator against your skin. With the help of Ultherapy’s ultrasound imaging your skin depth will be assessed to determine optimal placement of the treatment energy, and then deliver the focused ultrasound energy beneath the skin’s surface.During the treatment delivery, you will feel tiny amounts of energy being deposited to precise depths, indicating that the collagen-building process has been initiated.

Ultherapy is a relatively painless procedure and comfort levels can vary from person to person, but the sensation only lasts while the energy is being delivered.

The length of your treatment will depend on the area being treated and your individual treatment plan. A face and neck procedure typically takes 60-90 minutes, while a chest treatment takes approximately 30 minutes.

Recovery

Some patients see an initial effect right after their treatment, but the real results appear over 2−3 months as new collagen works to lift and tighten skin on the neck, chin and brow as well as smooth skin on the chest. While Ultherapy won’t duplicate the results of a facelift, it’s a clinically proven non-invasive alternative for those not ready for surgery and can even be an option for patients who wish to extend the effects of cosmetic surgery.

Common Questions

Just one non-invasive Ultherapy® treatment may help counteract the effects of time, gravity and sun exposure without downtime. However, based on the degree of skin laxity, the biological response to ultrasound energy and the individual's collagen-building process, some patients benefit from additional treatments. Because skin continues to age, future touch-up treatments can help patients keep pace with the body's natural aging process.

After your Ultherapy® Treatment, you may see some initial effect, but the ultimate results will take place over 2-3 months, as your body naturally regenerates collagen. Since the procedure stimulates your own collagen production, how long the results last really depends onyour own natural aging process and that will dictate how long that translates into visible results on the outside. Results however typically last for 2-4 years till the ageing process restarts.

With Ultherapy, there is no downtime! You can return to your normal activities immediately after your procedure without any post-treatment restrictions or requirements.Your skin might appear flushed at first, but the redness should disappear within a few hours. Some patients experience slight swelling, tingling or tenderness to the touch, but these are mild and temporary in nature.

Other, less common post-procedural effects may include temporary bruising or numbness on small areas of skin. As with any medical procedure, there is the possibility for other rare effects, which your practitioner will review with you.

The FDA-cleared Ultherapy® procedure has been used safely in over half a million treatments worldwide. Ultrasound energy has been used safely in the medical field for more than 50 years. In addition, every Ultherapy practitioner receives extensive procedural training, so you can feel confident in choosing a provider listed on the Ultherapy register.

Ultherapy uses sound energy which has special properties that allow it to bypass the surface of the skin to treat depths not matched by any other non-invasive cosmetic device. This ultrasound energy stimulates collagen production in the skin's foundation, resulting in a clinically significant lift of tissue over 2-3 months. Lasers rely on light energy, which cannot reach deeper skin layers at an optimal temperature, so laser treatments typically only treat superficial skin and are not FDA-cleared to lift skin.

Since the two technologies often treat different types of skin issues, they're actually very compatible.

Risks and Potential Complications

Possible complications include bleeding and collection of blood under the skin (hematoma), fluid accumulation(seroma), infection or poor healing at the incision site. These risks are common to many operations and can be dealt with easily. Blood clots in the deep veins of the leg is a problem associated with lying still for too long for which adequate prophylaxis is taken prior to surgery. Rarely pulmonary and Fat embolism are risks associated with any major prolonged surgery. Any surgery carries risks associated with anaesthesia. These risks will be fully discussed with you prior to your consent for surgery. It is important that you understand these aspects of your surgery and that you seek clarification from your surgeon.

During the Operation: Reactions to Drugs, Bleeding
Later: Painful Scars, Abnormal Scars, Persistent Lower Abdomen Numbness and Swelling and Umbilical Deformity
